Linux Operating System

            The Linux Operating System was created by Linus Torvalds initially as a hobby. The Linux software was originally based off of an attempt to improve the Minix, one of Linux’s smaller systems. When Linux was released, it was released as an open source freely distributed operating system, meaning that it was free to access and use by anyone. Although it was popularly received when it was first released, due to a large variety of workers upgrading it, it is now an accepted part of the software industry, providing many companies with a free operating system to run on their sold hardware.

            Linux distributions are Linux operating systems packaged with a variety of different software in the library. One Linux distribution is Hymera. The Hymera is a desktop version of Linux that includes a drive manager, a desktop recovery to reset the operating system back to its default, video recovery, IMobile, and a language manager. Another type of distribution is the GoblinX. The GoblinX features a variety of upgrades to the Linux kernel, including Vuze and Java JRE, and higher graphic compatibility with notebooks.

            You may obtain Linux distributions through a variety of methods, one of them including purchasing it directly from the distribution manufacturers. There are many companies that profit from creating different distributions of Linux, and sell it to consumers or users that need it. It is also possible to download it from a variety of companies of individuals that offer them for free. This includes the Linux site itself, which offers a basic version of Linux to download into a CD from its site.

            One of the many popular applications for the Linux operating system is Apache. The Apache is the most popular web server available for the Linux system since 1996, and currently hosts more than 70% of all internet websites. It is a free software for Linux. The GIMP is also another popular program, and runs similarly to Adobe Photoshop. It is yet another free piece of software for the Linux that is designed to edit and alter photos.

            An advantage to using the Linux operating system as opposed to a Windows operating system is that the Linux is a free software, meaning that the cost of your computer can be steeply reduced as opposed to the expensive Windows, which usually adds at least $100 to your hardware purchase if packaged along with it. A disadvantage of the Linux compared to Windows is that it is not compatible with quite a few things, both software and hardware. This means you will have to spend time converting software to operate on the Linux, or may even need to change your hardware to have Linux operate at all.
